The Sound of Music

This is the beginning. Music, Art, Blogs, Rants, it will all be here.

Never ask friends to listen to your music, the majority won’t. Unless they are told to by someone else of course, otherwise you may as well be shoving a turd under their nose. It’s incredible the time and effort that goes into writing and recording a song, that creativity is a wonderful thing, Military Grade Peace is the name I operate under, I like having a band name rather than just be a solo artist.
I grew up in London, England, Lambeth to be precise, I want to school in a shitty place near Battersea, there were some real scummy fuckers at that school, it was a dangerous time. I have never met a human crueler than kids. On the bright side though, at school someone gave me a 7″ single, The Jam, This is the Modern World as well as a cassette with Dead Kennedy’s In God we Trust EP. Holy fuck, life changing moments, I have not stopped being obsessed with music since.
Records were a great place to find solace, to educate yourself, to show that working class people can be autodidacts when further education is not a financial option.

Remember those musical trees? I think I could trace my life through those things, you jump around eras at times, The Jam, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Clash, then the new wave,  Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Section 25, Crispy Ambulance, Theatre of Hate, Bauhaus, Echo & the Bunnymen, etc, then back to seek their influences, David Bowie, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Can, then perhaps their antecedents, The Small Faces, The Beatles, The Doors. Throw in the various giants from other eras, Bob Marley, Public Enemy, Keith Hudson, Peter Tosh, Nirvana, and up to today, Arctic Monkeys, Sleaford Mods, Fat White Family, Akala, Future of the Left, Lowkey, and it’s a time leaping plethora of genius and joy.

So why make music? Because I have to.

1989 my first band was Noise Bombs, we played a few gigs across London and didn’t last long, 1993 was my next band Infected, (we changed our name so often, but that was the first), 1997, move to Canada, in 2007 I formed The McCarthy Hearings, 2011 I started Sound/S/Lab, releasing  3 albums and an EP in the space of 5 years, and now there is Military Grade Peace. So I am no youngster, but I know that there is life, then you die and that’s it. So fuck you to all ageists out there, only dead can be to old.
